LOGAN SQUARE — Play Matters Charter School wants to open a campus in either Logan Square or Avondale, according to a list of proposals released Tuesday.

The charter school operator is just one of 17 that submitted letters of intent, which were due Friday. A total of 20 campuses were proposed.

Chicago Public Schools reviews proposals for nearly a year before any approval is granted.

Michael Passman, a spokesman for CPS, said the district is "committed to a rigorous evaluation process that prioritizes quality and community support."

"Letters of intent mark the first step in an extensive application and review process, and we are committed to considering only proposals that demonstrate academic quality, community support, and ability to address an existing need in the city," Passman wrote in a prepared statement.

Play Matters wants the campus, which would enroll students in kindergarten through eighth grade, to open in 2018, according to the proposal.

According to the Sun-Times, it's not likely that all of the 20 campuses will be built, given the district's new cap on the total number of charter schools allowed in the city.
