CHICAGO — Some city employees got a nasty surprise to start 2017 — because of an error by Blue Cross Blue Shield, they found themselves without insurance.

A note about the problem posted by the city Thursday blamed "technical problems" by the insurance company.

Efforts are underway to resolve the error, said Mary Kay Accurso of the city's Benefit Services Division.

"These employee insurance plans remain active, and there should be no issues accessing coverage once the issue is resolved," Accurso said.

A spokeswoman for Blue Cross Blue Shield did not respond to questions about the error, or say when it would be resolved.

The glitch has forced many employees to pay full price for prescription drugs, since they could not access their insurance, according to comments posted on a Chicago police blog.

Those expenses will be reimbursed after the issue is resolved, said 38th Ward Ald. Nicholas Sposato

Employees are advised to call Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the city lists phone numbers for various insurance plans and problems. Click here for more information.
