PORTAGE PARK — The Irving-Austin Public Library, 6100 W. Irving Park Road, is planning multiple programs to keep kids and seniors busy in January.

Every Wednesday in January starting Jan. 11, the library will hold after-school activities at 4 p.m., including Lego-building and stargazing.

The library will hold a "winter story time" every Thursday between Jan. 12 and May 4. Each day will include three sections: a toddler story time at 10:30 a.m., a preschool slot at 11:15 a.m. and a story for babies at 12:15 p.m.

On Jan. 17, the library will hold a kids book club aimed at children between ages 3-5. A librarian will lead a reading of E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web," followed by a discussion, "light snack and simple craft project or activity," according to an announcement. The event starts at 4 p.m.

At 12:30 p.m. Jan. 30, the library will hold its monthly play group for children 5 and under, featuring "stories and games and plenty of time for open, unstructured play." The event will be repeated at 10:30 a.m. on the last Tuesday of every month from February to May.

Children won't be the only ones learning. On Jan. 31. a representative from Mather's More than a Cafe in Evanston will be on hand to teach a "Know what your grandkids know" workshop to seniors. The class will cover literacy of smartphones, apps and social media.
