LAKEVIEW — A new donut shop from Bow Truss mogul Phil Tadros will replace Budlong Chicken and, prior to that the microbakery Bunny, in a Lakeview storefront that has struggled to keep a tenant over the past year.

Angry Donut will open in early 2017 at 2928 N. Broadway, although Tadros said there's "no rush," as he continues to expand the Bow Truss brand.

"Bow Truss already sells over 5,000 doughnuts a month," Tadros said. "With 20 [Bow Truss] locations, it makes sense. Plus it will be fun."

While Bow Truss sells Do-Rite doughnuts, Angry Donut will make its own and also sell Bow Truss drip coffee and frozen custard, Tadros said. He's also looking into doughnut breakfast sandwiches and considering late-night hours.

Unlike past partnerships in the small Lakeview East space, Tadros plans to go it alone on Angry Donut, a brand he said he first developed in 2010 through his Doejo studio.

Set on a bright pink background, the Angry Donut mascot was posted on the large sign out front on Thursday.

A simple cartoon, the furious pastry waves his fist in the air and shouts, "Bite me!"

It could easily be taken as a jab to Budlong Chicken's Jared Leonard, whom Tadros sued in October over the heated battle for the hot chicken joint.

But Tadros said his Angry Donut slogan has nothing to do with Budlong or Leonard and is "coincidental, but interesting."
