ANDERSONVILLE — Hopleaf is one of 52 restaurants around Chicago to receive the Bib Gourmand designation.

The Michelin Guide's award is given to restaurants with good food at an affordable price, according to the Tribune. "Affordable" is two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less, according to Crain's.

"When I look at the other places we share this honor with, I am humbled. And when I see places I know to be great that are not included, I am more grateful to be chosen," said Michael Roper, owner of the restaurant at 5148 N. Clark St.

Roper said it was an honor and great endorsement to once again make the list especially "in a very, very competitive restaurant market."

While the spotlight is usually on new restaurants, receiving the designation as a veteran neighborhood spot is very telling, he said.

"We work very hard to offer the well-prepared, carefully-sourced and sustainable foods we serve. We try hard to have a pleasing atmosphere and aesthetic. We strive to be good neighbors. I know that there are hundreds of other operators who work every bit as hard as we do and are not selected," Roper said.

The restaurant is currently being renovated in preparation for its 25th anniversary, but will not close during construction.

Nearby restaurants Jin Thai Cuisine, 5458 N. Broadway, and Herb, 5424 N. Broadway, also made the list.

"In the end, the most important accolade is the full seats, happy regulars and impressed newcomers. With so many choices, that many choose us still amazes and gratifies me. It makes me excited to come to work every day," Roper said.

The coveted Chicago Michelin star recipients will be announced Nov. 2.
