BRIDGEPORT — An off-duty police officer was grazed by a bullet while driving in Bridgeport early Sunday morning, police said.

Just after 5 a.m., the officer had finished an overnight shift and was driving his personal car on 31st Street near Loomis Street when another car pulled up alongside his, according to a statement from Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Someone in the car drew a gun and fired shots at the officer, and the officer returned fire, Guglielmi said. The other car then sped away.

The officer went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in good condition with a graze wound in his upper arm, Guglielmi said. He was later released from the hospital.

Detectives are investigating the motive of the shooting, Guglielmi said.
