Here's How Not To Dock Your Boat At DuSable Harbor

They forgot to put their drain plugs in.

CHICAGO — Here's how not to dock a boat.

The owner of this vessel docked Monday at DuSable Harbor learned what happens when you forget to inspect your boat upon returning it to water.

The hard way.

Employees of the Downtown harbor at 150 N. Lake Shore Drive said no one was injured when the boat sank Monday.

But a picture of the accident has been viewed more than 400,000 times since being posted to Reddit two days ago — adding insult to the boat's injury.

Westrec Marinas manages Chicago's nine lakefront harbors. Scott Stevenson, an executive vice president at Westrec, said boats sink "several times a summer" here.

"Boats are funny things," Stevenson said. If a hole where a drain plug or something else is supposed to go is left unfilled, "the boat goes right to the bottom."

Harbor employees said the boat was towed away after being rescued from Lake Michigan. The boat's owner is unknown and could not be reached for comment.
