LINCOLN SQUARE — Nearly a year after it announced plans to open in Lincoln Square, La Boulangerie served its first baguette on Monday.

It was a quiet opening for the French bakery and cafe — if an all-caps "WE ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN!" post on Facebook counts as quiet — which followed Lycee Francais, the French school, to the neighborhood.

Word spread quickly, nonetheless, and by the end of the day, the croissants had been picked clean and a lone eclair remained in the pastry case, wondering "why not me?"

La Boulangerie, which has a sister location in Lakeview, delivers on all of the promises owner Vincent Colombet made back in fall 2015.

There are sandwiches and crepes on the menu, as well as loaves of fresh breads, rows and rows of colorful macarons, croissants, mini-tarts and La Colombe coffee. The spacious 3,000-square-foot storefront, at 1945 W. Wilson Ave., has copious seating for patrons who opt to enjoy their pastry on-site.

Gilles Lazerges, a partner in the enterprise, emphasized that the bakery is still very much in soft-open mode.

Hours will eventually be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. but in these early days are starting out at a later 9 a.m.
