BRIDGEPORT — Neighborhood schools will have $5.8 million less to spend this year than last year, a DNAinfo analysis shows.

At the end of budget-cutting season, almost two dozen schools in the 60608, 60609 and 60616 ZIP codes — including Bridgeport, Chinatown, Canaryville and Back of the Yards — took major hits.

The area's big winner was Back of the Yards High School, which stands to gain $1.17 million. Daley Elementary is expected to take the biggest cut at $588,938.

Chicago Public Schools last week released a school-by-school budget breakdown detailing across-the-board cuts — but those numbers were obscured by a change in the way CPS funds special education services for nearly 50,000 students.

Under the new funding approach, each school is given money to carry the costs of special education in its budget. In the past, CPS' central office picked up those expenses. The change obscured overall cuts.

Chicago Public Schools citywide are down $140 million.

DNAinfo’s latest analysis uses the original budget numbers for the 2015-16 school year, which did not include special education funding and leftover funds or debts from past years. The analysis compared those numbers to the 2016-17 budget, subtracting projected special education funds from figures provided by Chicago Public Schools.
