24 Hours In Chicago: Three Dead, 20 Wounded In Shootings Citywide

CHICAGO — Shootings have left three people dead and 20 wounded since Thursday, police said.

It was a bloody end to a month that saw violence surge compared to previous Junes. Police said 72 people were murdered this month, and there were 355 shootings that wounded or killed 429 people.

At 6:20 a.m. Friday, a man was found shot to death in Englewood.

About midnight, a 28-year-old man was shot in his head and killed in Chatham. A woman was wounded in the attack.

At 9:45 p.m. Thursday, a group of people were standing in front of a home in Brainerd when someone fired on them. A woman was killed and four people were wounded, two critically.

In non-fatal shootings:

• At 3:15 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in North Lawndale, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The man was sitting in a car in the 4800 block of West Arthington Street when a van drove up.

Two men got out of the car and one took out a gun and said he was robbing the victim, Amezaga said. The victim tried to drive away and the man shot at him.

The victim was hit in his neck, back and shoulder, Amezaga said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

• At 11:40 p.m. Thursday, a 19-year-old man was shot in Portage Park. Police said the man might have been trying the rob the person who shot him.

• At 10:30 p.m., two women were shot in Grand Crossing, Amezaga said. The women were in the 7400 block of South Langley Avenue when two men walked past them and one of the men fired shots.

A 35-year-old woman was shot in her right hand and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Amezaga said. A 23-year-old woman was shot in her stomach and was taken to Jackson Park Hospital.

• At 10:25 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in North Lawndale, Amezaga said. The man was walking down the street in the 1900 block of South St. Louis Avenue when a black SUV passed him and someone inside fired shots.

The man was hit in his right hand and his left leg was grazed by a bullet, Amezaga said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

The man was a documented gang member, police said.

• At 9:20 p.m., a 34-year-old woman was shot in the Near West Side.

• At 6:50 p.m., a 34-year-old woman was shot in Chatham, Amezaga said. The woman was in the 8100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when she was shot in her hip.

The woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, Amezaga said.

The woman was uncooperative, police said.

• At 4:25 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in Englewood while walking outside.

• At 4 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was shot in Austin, Amezaga said. The woman was walking in the 5200 block of West LeMoyne Street when a man got out of a maroon van, shot her and then drove off.

The woman was hit in her right and left forearms. She was taken to West Surbuban Hospital in good condition, Amezaga said.

The woman was uncooperative, police said.

• At 2 p.m., a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old woman were shot in Humboldt Park.

• Also at 2 p.m., a 17-year-old was shot in North Lawndale, Amezaga said. The teen was standing in a vacant lot in the 1200 block of South Avers Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain.

The teen was hit in his left leg. He took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was not released but he was listed as "stable," Amezaga said.

The teen was a documented gang member and was uncooperative, police said.

• At 11:05 a.m., two men were shot in Englewood.

• At 8:15 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in Englewood.

No one was in custody in these shootings unless otherwise noted.
