CHICAGO — The family of a 3-year-old boy who will never walk again after being shot on Father's Day needs your help.

On Thursday, Mary Mitchell of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote a devastating column about Devon Quinn, the little boy who was shot in his right shoulder while in his dad's car June 19 in the 6100 block of South Kimbark Avenue.

When the gunfire erupted, Devon's dad threw his body over the boy in an attempt to shield him. But the damage had been done. DeSean Wynn, 23, was charged in the shooting and prosecutors say he was firing at rival gang members nearby.

Mitchell writes that Devon's mom and dad now have no car — since police impounded it as evidence — and even so, they wouldn't want to step foot in it again after what happened.

Devon is paralyzed from his chest down, has no feeling in his limbs and cannot breathe on his own, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said in bond court last week.

The bullet is lodged near the boy's carotid artery, and he will never recover from his paralysis or breathe on his own, she said.

The shooting will change the family's life forever, they told Mitchell:

Now Devon’s young parents have to come up with money for a vehicle so they will be able to take Devon for rehabilitation. They also will have to move out of their second-floor apartment to a safer neighborhood. Even being at the hospital all day is a hardship because the cash-strapped couple is spending almost $30 a day for food.

Before Mitchell's column ran, the couple had only raised $175 on GoFundMe. Since then, more than $6,700 had been raised. You can donate here.
