CHICAGO — An off-duty Sheriff's deputy shot a 15-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man after witnessing the two shoot at a car in Chicago Lawn Sunday, according to police.

The deputy was eating in his car in the 7000 block of South Kanst Drive at 8:40 p.m. when he saw the man and boy get into an argument with a car full of people, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The 15-year-old and 23-year-old pulled out guns and opened fire on the car, Pacheco said.

The sheriff's deputy then got out of his car and identified himself to the attackers as an officer, Pacheco said, when the two then turned their guns on the deputy. The deputy pulled out his gun and shot the two, Pacheco said.

The 15-year-old boy was shot in his right leg and the 23-year-old was shot in his right ankle, Pacheco said. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition.

The boy and the 23-year-old man are both documented gang members, according to police. Charges are pending against the two, Pacheco said.
