CHICAGO — White Sox second baseman Brett Lawrie has been turning heads this season with some sparkling defensive moves — and a mouth guard that makes him look rather ferocious in a vampire kind of way.
The Canadian-born player was asked by Toronto media covering the Blue Jays' visit to U.S. Cellular Field this weekend, What's up with the big bite?
Sure, it's okay when Lawrie does it, but when I wore my plastic vampire fangs to little league my father disowned me pic.twitter.com/v02aE32Yqj

He insists he's not trying to make a statement: "It just pops out," he said, according to the Toronto Star.
He started using the mouth guard in spring training.
“I think there’s some science behind it when you bite down or something like that. Keeping your head steady, or whatever it may be. I’m not really sure the full science behind it, but it’s something along those lines. I don’t really think too much about it,” he said.
Sox TV broadcaster Jason Benetti has dubbed Lawrie the "Canadian Vampire."

I'm sure I've seen dumber looking things than Brett Lawrie's vampire mouth guard, but none of them come to mind

I love Brett Lawrie and his vampire fangs mouthpiece...except when he strikes out. #WhiteSox
