CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer shot a man following a foot chase in Humboldt Park Sunday night, the department says.

Officers patrolling the Puerto Rican Festival Sunday noticed a "suspicious" man who was walking with a large group at 9 p.m. near North and Washtenaw avenues, the Chicago Police Department said in a statement.

As officers approached, the man began running away while holding something in the waistband of his pants, police said. As police got closer to the man they noticed that he was armed with a handgun, police said.

The man ran to the 1600 block of North Washtenaw Avenue when he turned towards an officer who then fired at the man, police said.

He was struck in his lower extremities, police said. The officer who fired reportedly applied a tourniquet to the man, said to be in his 20s, and he was brought to an area hospital, where his condition was not released but police said he was stable.

Police say they recovered a weapon at the scene. No officers were hurt in the incident, police said.

The incident is under review by the Independent Police Review Authority. The officer involved in the shooting is placed on desk duty for 30 days, the department said.
