Shootings Kill 5 People, Wound 12 Since Friday, Police Say

CHICAGO — Five people have been killed and 12 wounded in shootings since Friday, police said.

At 6:30 a.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old man was shot to death in Austin.

At 3:40 a.m., a 24-year-old man was shot and killed and two others were wounded in University Village.

At 1:30 a.m., 18-year-old Latrell McMahon was shot in his abdomen and killed in Garfield Park. Another man was wounded in the shooting.

At 10:30 p.m. Friday, Charles Wiley, 22, was shot to death in North Lawndale.

At 9 p.m., 16-year-old Melvin Cook was shot in his head and killed in Englewood.

In non-fatal shootings:

• At 5:24 a.m. Saturday, a 27-year-old man was shot while walking near Lakeshore Drive in Lakeview.

• At 4:30 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot in Kilbourn Park, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The man was sitting in front of a home in the 3400 block of North Lowell Avenue when a car drove past and someone inside fired shots.

The man was hit in his buttocks. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," Trainor said.

The victim was being highly uncooperative, police said.

• At 8:35 p.m. Friday, a 23-year-old man was shot in Grand Crossing, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police spokesman. The man was in the 1400 block of East 70th Street when he was shot in his left leg.

The man took himself to South Shore Hospital, where he was in fair condition, Zala said.

The man was being highly uncooperative and the circumstances of the shooting were unknown, police said. The man was also a documented gang member and convicted felon.

• At 6:30 p.m., two men were shot in Bronzeville, Zala said. The men were inside a parked car in the 4400 block of South Prairie Avenue when a dark SUV drove by and someone inside fired shots.

A 44-year-old man was hit in his left hip and a 33-year-old man was hit in his left leg. They took themselves to Mercy Hospital, where they were in good condition, Zala said.

• At 5:37 p.m., a 39-year-old woman was shot in North Lawndale, Zala said. The woman was inside a parked car in the 3100 block of West Douglas Boulevard when a bullet came through her windshield.

The woman was hit in her left wrist. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was in good condition, Zala said.

• At 5:15 p.m., a 17-year-old was shot in North Lawndale, Zala said. The teen was standing in an alley in the 3100 block of West Lexington Avenue when a black sedan drove past and the teen heard shots and felt pain.

The teen was hit in his left hand. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in good condition, Zala said.

• At 3:40 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in Austin, Zala said. The man was standing in a restaurant's parking lot in the 5500 block of West North Avenue when three men walked up. Two of the men took out guns and fired, Zala said.

The man was hit in his right hand and right leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was in good condition, Zala said.

• At 3:15 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded in Chatham.
