COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A South Side man murdered his girlfriend after she refused to have sex with a neighbor and didn't perform "her womanly duties," prosecutors said Friday.

Robert Simon, 45, confessed to the fatal shooting, which happened April 3 in the couple's apartment in the 1700 block of East 85th Place, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said during a bond hearing Friday.

The victim, 35-year-old Babette Miller, filed a police report April 1 claiming Simon threatened her with a gun after she refused to have sex with him and a neighbor, prosecutors said.

Miller also told officers Simon had slapped her the previous evening "for not performing her womanly duties," Santini said. Santini did not spell out exactly what "womanly duties" entailed.

Miller shared the police report with a friend via Facebook, prosecutors said — telling the friend she feared Simon would hurt her.

When no one heard from Miller on April 3 or 4, her parents broke into her Avalon Park apartment and found Miller dead, laying face-down in bed "unresponsive and cold to the touch," according to Santini. She'd been shot multiple times.

Police found .22 caliber shell casings in Miller's bedroom, .22 caliber live rounds in an ashtray and an empty gun holster on the scene, prosecutors said.

Simon, who worked as an Uber driver until April, was nowhere to be found, according to court testimony.

On April 8, he turned himself in to Minneapolis police and confessed to murdering Miller, Santini said. Video surveillance shows Simon parking outside a Minnesota police station, taking two guns out of his trunk and placing them in the passenger's seat.

Once inside the station, Simon turned over his car keys, prosecutors noted. Officers recovered .38 caliber and .22 caliber handguns; Simon is now facing weapons charges in Minnesota.

He was extradited June 2 to Chicago, where he confessed to murdering Miller with a .22 caliber handgun following an argument, Santini said.

Simon is charged with first-degree murder.

According to his public defender, Simon had worked as an Uber driver since last summer. He has four children, ranging in age from 15 to 25, the attorney said.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Friday ordered Simon held without bail, calling him "a clear risk."
