CHICAGO — A Lakeview man has been charged with arson after officers saw him lighting a couch on fire in an alley behind Belmont Avenue early Tuesday morning, according to police.

Officers witnessed Colin Weis, 24, ignite a couch at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday in an alley in the 900 block of West Belmont Avenue, police said in a news release.

The couch was sitting next to a recycled oil container from a nearby restaurant, police said.

Officers called the Fire Department, which extinguished the couch fire, according to police. The fire caused limited damage and no people were reported injured, police said.

Officers then arrested Weis, of the 3200 block of North Clark Street. He has been charged with one felony count of arson and was slated to appear in bond court Tuesday.

Lakeview has seen a rash of fires, including one in April that injured four.

The arrest comes after police warned Lakeview residents in April of garbage fires being set in the neighborhood.
