WICKER PARK —  Just in time for Friday night's Prince Walk, which kicks off in Wicker Park's namesake park at sunset, and Sunday's massive plant sale, the park's centerpiece fountain is now bubbling with water.

The historic Gurgoyle fountain's water was turned on around noon Thursday, according to witnesses.

On Thursday night, several people were sitting on benches surrounding the fountain in the park at 1425 N. Damen Ave. and enjoying the smell and sight of running water.

The centerpiece of Wicker Park's namesake park, the fountain is decorated by volunteers for the holidays in winter and its urns are adorned with plants and flowers in April.

The fountain was installed in 2001 and is a replica of an 1890s-era version of the structure made by J.L. Mott Ironworks, according to a Park District directory that features 300 fountains, monuments and sculptures.

The Prince Walk features fans gathering Friday night for music and a march in honor of the late pop singer. The plant sale is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Elsewhere in the city, the Crown fountain in Millennium Park, featuring modern-day totem poles known for their spitting images of Chicagoans, was turned on earlier this week.
