SOUTH LOOP — A $130 million project to reconstruct the link between Lake Shore Drive and the Stevenson Expy. has hit its one-year anniversary.

Let's not all cheer at once.

The opening of the new ramps and bridges is still months away: The effort's projected finish is winter 2017.

It is kinda beautiful from the air, though.

The Illinois Department of Transportation recently posted on its Flickr account aerial photos showing the project in all its labyrinthine glory.

The project will include six new bridges, six retaining walls and modification to its drainage.

"Based on the age and condition of the structures, they need to be replaced," IDOT said. They'll also be wider for better traffic flow.
