COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Police found 21 shell casings at the scene of the Back of the Yards shooting that killed 24-year-old Glenn Wheeler, prosecutors said Thursday.

Omar Dishman, 22, has been charged with first-degree murder in the April 26 attack, which happened about 4:30 p.m. in the 900 block of West Garfield Boulevard.

Wheeler and a friend were standing near 52nd and Halsted streets, waiting to cross the road, when a silver car drove past, Assistant State's Attorney Marilyn Salas-Wail said during a bond hearing Thursday. Dishman was one of the passengers in the car.

He and Wheeler's friend had known each other for more than a decade, according to authorities. During that time, the friend transferred schools twice due to an ongoing gang dispute with Dishman and Dishman's friends, Salas-Wail said.

Dishman, a Black P-Stone, allegedly accused the friend of being affiliated with a rival gang, prosecutors noted.

Wheeler and his friend got into Wheeler's car and began heading south on Halsted with Wheeler driving the vehicle, Salas-Wail said. They soon spotted the silver car following them, and Wheeler's friend allegedly noticed Dishman throwing gang signs in the rear view mirror.

When Wheeler eventually stopped at a red light in the 900 block of West Garfield Boulevard, court records show, Dishman and an accomplice got out of the silver car, walked toward Wheeler's car and began shooting.

Wheeler tried to get out of his car and run, prosecutors said, but he collapsed in the street. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

His friend, meanwhile, was shot in the back. A bullet is still lodged in his left rib cage, Salas-Wail said.

Dishman and his accomplice, who has yet to be caught, got back in the silver car and drove off after the shooting, according to prosecutors. Wheeler's friend was able to identity Dishman as one of the shooters.

Police on the scene recovered 21 shell casings from both 9-mm and .40 caliber guns.

Officers arrested Dishman on a warrant Monday. He was riding in a car at the time, prosecutors said, and police recovered a 9-mm handgun in that vehicle. Illinois State Police were able to match at least one of the 9-mm shell casings at the scene of the fatal shooting to that gun, Salas-Wail said.

Dishman, of the 5100 block of South Morgan Street, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Thursday ordered Dishman held without bail.
