Brazel, of the 5800 block of South Neva Avenue, is facing four felony charges and one misdemeanor charge, including reckless homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Chavez's family is asking for donations to help bury her, saying the days since her death have been a "living nightmare."

Chavez, a nurse, had just become a grandmother before the accident. She was also raising her 14-year-old daughter, her family wrote on GoFundMe.

Chavez was an "an excellent mother, full of positive energy, and [she] always wanted to see people with a smile," her family said. She "dodged obstacles day by day and still stayed strong and shined like a sun."

The family has raised more than $3,600 so far through GoFundMe for Chavez's funeral.

"We wish this didn't happen, but it did, and now all we can do is show her respect and give her a beautiful funeral that she deserves," her family said.
