Light Pole Falls On Teen in Hyde Park And Breaks Her Leg

By Alex Nitkin | May 2, 2016 3:20pm

HYDE PARK — A 16-year-old girl was in serious condition after she was hit by a falling street light in Hyde Park late Monday morning, police said.

Around 11 a.m., a police sergeant was standing near a group of students in the 5200 block of Lake Park Avenue — a block away from Kenwood Academy High School — when a pole fell and hit them, according to Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The sergeant enlisted a group of bystanders to help pull the pole off of them, Quaid said.

The 16-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Quaid said, where she was listed in serious condition with two compound fractures in her leg.

Two other students were brought to University of Chicago Medical Center out of "an abundance of caution," although they had "no visible injuries," Quaid said.
