EDGEWATER — Detectives are searching for the killer of a 21-year-old West Ridge woman who was shot dead early Monday in an SUV near one of Edgewater's main intersections.
Karina Soria-Bautista, of the 6300 block of North Claremont, was driving an SUV and her boyfriend, who is a documented gang member, was in the passenger seat, authorities said.
While stopped in the 5900 block of North Ridge Avenue at 12:55 a.m. Monday, a gray car pulled up and a man inside opened fire, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
After being shot, Soria-Bautista drove north on Ridge Avenue for about another block before finally pulling up alongside Patch Landscaping and Snow Removal, 6107 N. Ridge Ave., where the SUV was found.
Soria-Bautista was shot in her head, Pacheco said. She was rushed to St. Francis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m.
Soria-Bautista had a young son who she called her "pollito," or chick, on Facebook posts.
Investigators blocked off part of the street overnight, marking shell casings on the street near the Heart O' Chicago Motel, 5990 M. Ridge Avenue.
No arrests have been made.
Nearby resident Tracey Alcoser told ABC7 she heard five shots.
"I just heard a 'bop bop bop bop bop.' Five times. I ran downstairs and looked outside and I didn't see anything. So I went back upstairs. Then I saw this action out here," Alcoser said.
The scene of the shooting is near the busy intersection where Peterson meets Ridge, near Clark Street, a path used by commuters heading to and from Lake Shore Drive.
