8 Things To Do In Andersonville And Uptown This Weekend

UPTOWN/ANDERSONVILLE — From art exhibit openings to the Illinois State Yo-yo Championships, there are tons of unique ways to explore the 'hoods this weekend.

Here are 8 things happening in Uptown and Andersonville this weekend:

Learn About Scandinavian Drinking: Friday, the Swedish American Museum opens its new exhibit "Skål! Scandinavian Spirits," which explores drinking habits in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The exhibit, which is curated by the Museum of Danish America, explores the cultural history of beer and aquavit in the countries. The "Start with Art" tour will occur from 9 a.m.-noon and Family Night, which includes crafts and activities related to the exhibit, will be from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. 5211 N. Clark St.

Illinois State Yo-Yo Championships: The second largest Yo-yo competition in the country is coming to Everybody's Coffee this weekend. For more information on the competition click here. Everybody's Coffee, 935 W. Wilson Ave. 9 a.m. $10-$20 to participate. The event is free.

Watch 'Much Ado About Nothing' at the Library: To celebrate Shakespeare and his legacy, Shakespeare 400 Chicago, will host a screening of Joss Whedon's contemporary take on the classic comedy at the Bezazian Library. 1226 W. Ainslie St. 2-4 p.m.

Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day: Andersonville's Women and Children First Bookstore will celebrate Indie Bookstore Day with live music, refreshments and conversations with award-winning authors. On Saturday, the store will serve refreshments from The Coffee Studio and offer Indie Bookstore Day gear along with discounted merchandise. For more information on the event click here. 5233 N. Clark St. Events will occur at various times throughout the day. Free.

Check Out a Local Artist's Exhibition at Everybody's Coffee: Uptown photographer Candace Casey opens her exhibit "Ethereal Abandonment," which explores her three decades of photographing ruins, at Everybody's Coffee. The images are digitally rendered onto film then manipulated to superimpose other elements for a collage effect. 935 W. Wilson Ave.

Banda-Palooza at the Aragon: Saturday night, the Aragon Ballroom will host Banda-palooza featuring performances from Banda Los Recoditos and La Adictiva Banda San Jose De Mesillas. Tickets to the show are $43 and available here. 1106 W. Lawrence Ave. 7 p.m.

Check Out A New Restaurant: After what seems like forever, the Middle East Bakery and Grocery has finally opened its restaurant expansion. 1512 W. Foster St.

Live Music at The Green Mill: The Pat Miller Quartet featuring Bill Carrothers will perform two shows at the Green Mill this weekend. The quartet features Miller on the saxophone, Carrothers on the piano, Dennis Carrol on bass and George Fludas on drums. From 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday and 8 p.m.-midnight Saturday. $15 cover. 4802 N. Broadway.
