DUNNING — Once known for being a murky green color not found elsewhere in nature, the Chicago River is at the center of an effort to bring more opportunities for work and play to its banks.

Great Rivers Chicago — a partnership between the City of Chicago, Metropolitan Planning Council, Friends of the Chicago River and others — will host a meeting at 6 p.m. May 11 at the Dunning branch of the Chicago Public Library, 7455 W. Cornelia Ave.

The organization is crafting a plan to drive new investment in parks, job opportunities, housing and transportation along the Chicago, Calumet and Des Plaines rivers. It is set to be released this summer.

The community meeting is designed to give Far Northwest Side residents a chance to share their vision for the future of the Des Plaines River, organizers said.
