CHICAGO — Former Mayor Richard M. Daley, who turns 74 on Sunday, will get a special gift from City Hall press corps dean Bill Cameron that celebrates the Daley legacy ... of misspeaks, mispronunciations and malapropisms, that is.

Cameron, a WLS-AM reporter, has been rolling tape during mayoral press conferences for more than 40 years while covering City Hall, making sure to catalog for posterity the famous mayoral verbal flubs uttered by Daley and his late father, former Mayor Richard J. Daley.

My favorite bit of tape captures the time Daley, facing dogged questioning, blurted out, “Scrutiny? Do you want to take my shorts?” while Cameron’s tape rolled. “Give me a break,” Daley continued. “Go scrutinize yourself. I get scrootened every day.”

Cameron’s hilarious audio montage includes the mayor explaining why he's fortunate to have a “corporate community I can step on,” telling reporters that he's absolutely a “pro-death” mayor and, of course, the time Daley introduced Indiana rocker John Cougar Mellencamp as “John Mellencrap.”

You can hear “Mayor Daley’s Greatest Hits” in its entirety on "Connected to Chicago with Bill Cameron" at 7 p.m. Sunday on WLS-AM (890).
