ANDERSONVILLE — Women and Children First will celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with live music, refreshments and conversations with award-winning authors.

On April 30, the bookstore at 5233 N. Clark St. will serve refreshments from The Coffee Studio and Indie Bookstore Day gear along with offering discount merchandise, according to a news release for the store.

From noon to 2 p.m., Freda Love Smith, the former drummer of Blake Babies, and her husband, Jake Smith, will perform an acoustic concert in the store while serving up samples of recipes from her book "Red Velvet Underground." The book, which is part memoir and part cookbook, explores the role of food on her journey from indie-rock musician to the married life, according to a news release from Agate Publishing.

At 4 p.m., Ana Castillo will discuss her new collection of essay's "Black Dove: Mama, Mi'jo and Me" with Cyn Vargas. The book "weaves intergenerational stories traveling from Mexico City to Chicago" while explaining life as "a single, brown, feminist parent in a world of mass incarceration, racial profiling, and police brutality," according to the release from Women and Children First.

Castillo also wrote "So Far From God" and "Sapogonia," which both were listed as New York Times Books of the Year.

Vargas was named one of Guild's Literary Complex's Writers to Watch in 2014 and a company member of 2nd Story, the release said.
