OLD TOWN — An independently owned doughnut and coffee shop that allows customers to decorate their own doughnuts is set to open on Wells Street Monday.

At Doodle's Doughnuts, 1419 N. Wells St., customers are encouraged to decorate their own Bismarck doughnuts ($3.50) using a piping bag of colored icing. Bismark doughnuts are filled pastries minus the hole.

The shop also serves doughnuts and fritters that don't need decorating if that's not your thing. Flavors like cinnamon crumb, cruller chocolate, lemon ginger and maple bacon are all on the menu. Single doughnuts range from $2.25 - $3.50.

To wash it all down, there will be Metropolis coffee, hot chocolate and cold beverages.

Owner and founder Dana Lanier was inspired by the independent doughnut shops where she grew up in northern California,. Lanier, a lifelong baker, decided to start making doughnuts at home, which eventually grew into a shop of her own.

The shop will be open 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays and 7 a.m.-midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
