COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — One of the men who robbed two Minnesota tourists near Oak Street Beach last year was on parole for robbery at the time of the attack, prosecutors said Wednesday.

During the late-night scuffle, one of the victims, a 27-year-old man, was able to grab an attacker's knife and slash him with it, prosecutors said.

The attackers scattered, and two suspects — Noe Mondragon, 22, and Luis Salgado-Camargo, 18 — were arrested and charged shortly after the Oct. 24 attack, court records show.

Police on Oct. 25 issued a warrant for the third suspect, 20-year-old Daniel Morales. He was arrested Sunday and is charged with two counts of armed robbery.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Wednesday set bail for Morales, of the 4100 block of West 25th Place, at $500,000.

Morales had been released on parole for two robbery convictions in early September — roughly six weeks before the Oak Street Beach attack, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

The Gold Coast robbery happened about 11:50 p.m. Oct. 24 as two tourists, the 27-year-old man and his 26-year-old girlfriend, were walking back to their hotel, prosecutors said.

The couple got lost searching for an underpass in the 1100 block of North Lake Shore Drive, and soon found themselves surrounded by Morales, Mondragon and Salgado-Camargo, prosecutors said.

Armed with a 4-inch knife, the men stole a wallet, credit cards, passport and cell phone from the victims, according to authorities.

The male victim got stabbed in his arm during a subsequent scuffle, but was also able to grab a suspect's knife and slash Salgado-Camargo, prosecutors said.

Salgado-Camargo, of the 4100 block of West 25th Street, was charged in October with two counts of armed robbery. His bail was set at $500,000. Mondragon, of the 4100 block of South Artesian Street, was charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery. His bail was set in October at $950,000.
