UPTOWN — Coffee enthusiasts will be treated to free coffee, treats, samples and demonstrations when the Midwest AeroPress Championships take over Everybody's Coffee Saturday.

AeroPress is a coffee brewing system developed by Alan Adler, who specialized in plastic toys then decided "to focus on the best way to make an espresso strength coffee without an espresso machine." Many people believe it to be the best method for brewing coffee, said Genesis Winter, a spokeswoman for Everybody's Coffee, at 935 W. Wilson Ave.

The event will begin with free coffee and demonstrations at 3 p.m. Saturday. The championship, which will feature competitors from "numerous coffee houses, coffee roasters, and also individuals with a love for AeroPress," will begin at 5 p.m. There are regional, country and world AeroPress championships. The winner of this competition will win a trip to the U.S. AeroPress Championships, Winter said.

After the contest, there will also be a latte throwdown, where participants can show off their latte art skills on a professional espresso machine. The entire event is free and treats from Everybody's Coffee's bakery will also be available, Winter said.

"This is a great opportunity to learn about a different brew method, try new coffee roasters, and get free samples from some of the best coffee aficionados around," Winter said.

Dozens of local coffee houses including Metric, Bowtruss, HalfWit, Metropolis will also be giving demonstrations and drinks to attendees.
