CHICAGO — It was fairly obvious Derrick Rose, Jabari Parker and Jahlil Okafor were going to have promising NBA careers, based on their Chicago high school performances.
WCIU this week released highlight tapes of Rose and Parker while they were stars at Simeon, and Okafor when he dominated the competition while attending Whitney Young. WCIU is a longtime broadcaster of local high school basketball games.
"When you look back at some of the broadcasts and watch players like D-Rose and Jabari Parker ... you realize what an honor it has been to be part of their journey from high school to college to the NBA," said Fred Weintraub, Executive Producer for WCIU's "Game of the Week."
Rose, now on the Bulls, was the 2007 Illinois Mr. Basketball after averaging 18.5 points and 7.5 assists as a Simeon senior. Parker, of the Bucks, was 2013's Mr. Basketball, beating second-place Okafor, now on the 76ers. Okafor claimed the Mr. Basketball award the next year.
The CPS semifinals and finals will be on WCIU and its sister station, "The U Too," this weekend.
