COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A suburban woman bit off part of another woman's finger during a fight in Englewood, prosecutors said.

Shantelle Tate, 38, allegedly told authorities, "It wasn't just a simple bite. [I] had to work at it to get the finger off," according to Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti, who spoke at a bond hearing Friday.

The incident started when Tate walked into a store in the 6200 block of South Morgan Street on Wednesday, prosecutors said. She allegedly got into an argument with a woman inside the store.

Prosecutors didn't specify whether the women knew each other or why they argued.

At some point, the women moved outside, and the fight turned physical, Antonietti said.

That's when Tate bit off part of the 47-year-old's right pinky finger, according to prosecutors. The tip of the finger was so mangled that doctors needed to remove part of the finger completely so that it would heal properly, Antonietti said.

Tate, who lives in south suburban Markham, is charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Friday ordered her held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
