HYDE PARK — Ethan Michaeli will visit 57th Street Books on Thursday to talk about his new book on the history of The Defender newspaper.

Michaeli, who was an investigative reporter and copyeditor at The Defender from 1991-96, will talk about his book on the newspaper’s role in black America in the 20th century with author Rick Perlstein at 6 p.m. Thursday at the bookstore at 1301 E. 57th St.

Michaeli’s new book, “The Defender: How the Legendary Black Newspaper Changed America,” tells the story of reporters who braved lynch mobs and abuse by police to report the news from the South Side of Chicago.

The event is free and open to the public.
