WICKER PARK — A man broke into Smoke Daddy BBQ, 1804 W. Division St., early Thursday morning, but he left before he could take anything, according to police and a restaurant chef.

At 5:11 a.m., an early-shift employee arrived to find that the glass on the front door had been broken, according to Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Employees said nothing had been stolen as far as they could tell.

"Unfortunately, it just seems like someone couldn't wait until opening to get our food, so they tried to get in early," joked Matt Eversmin, an executive chef with the 4 Star Restaurant Group, which manages Smoke Daddy. "It seems like he was only in here for a matter of seconds — the alarm must have scared him off."

By noon, Eversman said, employees had already patched up the door and replaced the glass.

"If you walked in right now, you wouldn't be able to tell anything happened," Eversman said. "So it was a little unnerving, yeah, but at the end of the day it wasn't that big a deal."

Eversman said a surveillance video makes out a figure that's barely identifiable as a man, but the picture is too dark to show any other detail.

An investigation of the incident is underway, Trainor said.
