LAKEVIEW — The ill-fated fish at a shuttered east Lakeview eatery will be swimming into 2016.

It was a happy Christmas for the Casbah Cafe fish, which got some help from city officials after neighbors grew alarmed that the conditions of the algae-covered, slowly draining tank would lead to their fishy demise.

The owner's wife returned to Casbah Cafe, 3151 N. Broadway, on Christmas Eve to remove the fish, said Julie Levar, director of communications for Ald. Tom Tunney (44th).

Animal Care and Control confirmed the fish were alive and accounted for at that time, Levar said. With the tank removed, Animal Care concluded its investigation.

The day before the fish were removed, Animal Care and Control posted a notice giving the restaurant 48 hours to remove the fish.

Casbah Cafe posted a sign earlier this month saying it was "closed temporarily."

The Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce received several phone calls about the fish, too, and said it hadn't heard anything about the closure or how long it would last.
