MOUNT GREENWOOD — Jordan Lynch scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday night as the Mount Greenwood native helped his team capture a Grey Cup
Lynch, a Mount Carmel graduate, scored on a 1-yard sneak with 3:22 left in the game as the Eskimos rallied to beat the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20. It's the 14th title for the Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.
A Heisman Trophy finalist, Lynch signed with the Eskimos in January. The CFL rookie threw for 6,209 yards and 51 touchdowns in four seasons at Northern Illinois.
Lynch is also a product of St. Christina School in Mount Greenwood.
He scored on a third-down play on Sunday in a 20-degree wind chill. Starting quarterback Mike Reilly then threw a 2-point conversion pass to Akeem Shavers. Reilly was selected the most valuable player of the game.
Lynch was waived by the Bears during the 2014 preseason after he had tried to make the team as a running back. Shortly after being cut by his hometown team, Lynch was interviewed by DNAinfo and remained positive.
"I have to keep working hard and wait for a call and, when my opportunity comes, make the most of it," he said.
