COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Washington Park man has been charged with opening fire at a barbecue in a public park in September — killing three people and wounding two others.

Calvan Colbert, 19, was ordered held without bail Monday after prosecutors said he and two other men — Lawrence Brown, 22, and Anthony Jackson, 20 — shot multiple rounds at a large group of people attending a barbecue in a park in the 300 block of West 42nd Street on Sept. 29.

Brown and Jackson were previously charged and criminally indicted in this case. Each is being held without bail.

According to Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini, all three men stepped out of a red minivan about 12:10 a.m. on Sept. 29 and opened fire at a group of roughly 20 people.

Three were killed: Antian Hardmon, 25, Tyrone Spikes, 28, and Ayanna Northern, 22.

Two others were wounded. A 22-year-old woman was shot in her knee as she held her 2-year-old daughter in her arms, Santini said. A 36-year-old man was shot in his leg, and the bullet shattered his bone.

After the shooting, Colbert, Brown and Jackson fled in the red minivan, Santini said.

Surveillance footage from several cameras in the area shows all three men in the red van prior to the shooting, according to prosecutors. The trio is seen parking the van in an alley adjacent to the park before getting out and walking toward the park, Santini said.

Several witnesses described watching the shooters run back to the van and drive off, prosecutors said, and surveillance footage shows the van driving to a nearby gas station 30 seconds after the shooting.

According to authorities, Jackson admitted to a witness he was involved in the shooting — and that same witness later saw Jackson urinate on his own hands in an attempt to wash away gun residue. Brown told the witness he was at the basketball court, Santini said, and a witness saw Colbert hide a 9mm gun in a suitcase.

Police found the red van on Oct. 2, prosecutors said. It had been set on fire and destroyed. According to Santini, the van was reported stolen from a Downtown parking lot on Sept. 28.

Colbert, of the 5200 block of South Indiana Avenue, was arrested at Cook County Jail, where he's currently awaiting trial for an attempted-murder case, in which he's also been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

His previous convictions include aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of marijuana.

When prosecutors asked Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. to hold Colbert without bail, Colbert's public defender didn't object.
