CHICAGO — Shortly after delivering remarks at a news conference related to the release of a video depicting a Chicago Police officer repeatedly shooting a teenager, Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended the city's tree-lighting ceremony at Millennium Park.

Greeted by polite applause as helicopters hovered overhead, Emanuel went on to call on "the spirit of togetherness and peace," but made no direct reference to the Laquan McDonald dashcam video, even as protesters were said to be massing on Michigan Avenue.

Opera star Renee Fleming sang "Silver Bells," and fireworks went off just after Emanuel helped pull the switch to light the holiday tree. The packed crowd at Millennium Park was appreciative, but quickly dispersed.

The annual tree-lighting ceremony was held in Millennium Park for the first time this year.
