Get Ready For The Bridgeport Edition of Small Business Saturday

By Ed Komenda | November 24, 2015 5:22am

BRIDGEPORT — For weeks, shop owner Leanne Scanlon has been preparing the neighborhood for Small Business Saturday.

The hard work has paid off. This year’s campaign to stoke the spirit local businesses in the neighborhood has shaped up to be the best yet.

The 4th Annual Shop Small Bridgeport Chicago will be our biggest event yet, with more businesses participating than ever before,” said Scanlon, co-owner of Hardscrabble Gifts, 3335 S. Halsted St. “It's been great growing the event and I can confidently say Shop Small Bridgeport Chicago will only get bigger.”

Small Business Saturday kicks off Saturday — the day after droves of shoppers rush the shelves of department stores nationwide for Black Friday.

In Bridgeport, more than 50 businesses will participate, hosting in-store activities and offering discounts and incentives to infuse the neighborhood with cash.

At Grandstand Sports, 600 W. 35th St., shop owners will offer 25 percent off on any regular priced, in stock, non-autographed items.

Jackalope Coffee & Tea House will offer 15 percent off to anyone who shows a Small Business Saturday passport at the counter. After your cup of coffee, you might want to head to the Richard J. Daley Library to catch a free punk rock show.

Hardscrabble will host a selfie contest for a chance to win a $100 gift card. From 1-4 p.m., Chicago Jazz Magazine artists Christine Jeffers and Charlie Krebs will be on site to sign prints.

“The fact that others from around the city are pledging to shop small here in our neighborhood is so awesome,” Scanlon said, “and really proves the efforts of signing up to be Neighborhood Champions for Shop Small to be worthwhile.”
