Daley Center Eternal Flame Keeps Pigeons Warm -- and Sometimes Roasts Them

DOWNTOWN — As the temperature dips and snow begins to fall, Chicagoans certainly are seeking the comfort of indoor heat.

The city's pigeons, on the other hand, are flying en masse to the Daley Center's Eternal Flame.

The feathered Chicago residents are routinely seen hanging out near the flame, a memorial to living and deceased members of the U.S. military, which has been lit since Aug. 22, 1972.

The website Roadside America once described the flame like this: "Contrary to its current appearance, it was not designed as a pigeon warmer."

The flame burns natural gas and is surrounded by a metal fence to keep people from burning themselves.

But pigeons can easily make it through, and the birds sometimes get burned.
