CHICAGO — The first big snowstorm of the season is coming, and Chicago is sending out its fleet of snow plows to fight back.

The city's Department of Streets and Sanitation said 210 snow plows will hit Chicago's main streets beginning at 10 p.m. Friday.

The city is anticipating a mix of snow and rain to start impacting the streets between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. — and then wrapping up between noon and 4 p.m. Saturday.

"Mayor Rahm Emanuel has made it clear to us that we are prepared — and we are — for any amount of snow," said Streets and San Deputy Commissioner Cole Stallard a news conference Friday afternoon.

The plows won't hit the side streets until after the snow stops and the main roadways are cleared.

The city expects between 2 to 4 inches on the South Side, and between 3 and 6 inches on North and Northwest Side.

Charles Mott, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said he expects it to start snowing at 9 p.m. The snow will fall most heavily overnight Friday into Saturday morning, he said, and it could cause problems on the road.

"This being the first snow in a few months, it’s gonna make it even tougher to drive," Mott said. "Visibility will be reduced. The tough part is even if just a couple inches fall, roads are gonna be slick and people should use caution ... ."

The snow will start letting up Saturday afternoon, Mott said.
