CHICAGO — The Department of Child and Family Services is investigating the mother of a 1-year-old boy who died in Austin, a spokesman said.

Makhari James, of the 4900 block of West Augusta Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, according to Cook County Medical Examiner's records.

Officer Nicole Trainor, Chicago Police spokeswoman, said James' parents were sleeping in the same bed as the young boy. They brought him to West Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There were no signs of foul play or neglect, and the death appeared to be accidental, Trainor said. Still, she said police are investigating.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office had not yet released autopsy results as of Thursday night.

DCFS spokesman Andrew Flach said the department is investigating Makhari's mother for allegations of neglect. They have had no prior contact with the mother, and she has no other children.
