CHICAGO — The Kelly High School marching band will be representing Chicago at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Friday.

Among one of the best marching bands in the Chicago Public Schools, the squad from the Brighton Park school will be making its first trip to the Sugar Bowl, set to take place Friday. The game between No. 16 Oklahoma State and No. 12 Ole Miss starts at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.

The band is scheduled to take part in the halftime performance with other high school and university marching bands alongside guest celebrity musicians, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help finance the trip.

Last month, the band took part in the 2015 McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago.

Kelly, 4136 S. California Ave., is know for its fine arts programs. It has ranked in the top 20 in the Illinois High School Association's music department rankings since 2009, according to a press release.

It won the prestigious Opus Foundation Grant for music education last year.

With a charter high school opening a mile from Kelly, hundreds of its students staged a walkout in October to help save the school from possible loss of funding.

Students were particularly worried about the potential loss of music and other fine arts programs, they said.
