Your Worst CTA Experiences: Cockroaches Crawling Out of a Jacket and More

By Justin Breen | November 16, 2015 5:35am

CHICAGO — In last week's story about CTAFails, DNAinfo asked readers about their worst experiences on Chicago's public transportation system.

Here are a few of their responses from their Neighborhood Square postings.

Neighborhood Square user @chitownlady57 might have had the grossest response, writing: "I once sat in awe as I watched cock roaches crawl outa a mans coat! OMG!"

Or perhaps @colleen-dignam takes the cake with her story: "My friend just moved here from Nebraska and took the red line to class. She saw a woman ... squat and urinate in the middle of the car."

Then there's this horror story from @howard-courtney: "I was standing behind the yellow line at the front of the bus after pulling the cord for the next stop. The driver was not paying attention to the car pulling out from the curb and swerved the bus so violently at the last minute I was thrown around and down the stairs. If I had not been holding onto the pole I would have been seriously injured."

To make it worse, @howard-courtney added: "I was in my mid 70s at the time. I was shaken and pulled myself up. The driver stopped the bus and stood up and announced to the other bus riders that they should take notice of me as I was standing IN FRONT of the yellow line and nearly caused him to have an accident. I was so dumb-founded I said nothing and got off the bus at the next stop where I lived."

But as the creator of CTAFails, Ryan Smith believes the CTA more often is reliable than not.

As Neighborhood Square user @sally-mclinn said: "Everybody who complains about Chicago's CTA should go to Detroit and try to catch a bus; or St. Louis, or any number of cities. You would be disappointed."
