LAKEVIEW — A new stage interpretation of "Romeo and Juliet" applauded for its use of sign language has extended its sold-out run through Dec. 12.

"R+J: The Vineyard" has been adored by critics and quickly sold out its first run, which ends next week. On Thursday, Oracle Productions added 11 more performances, but insists the show must close Dec. 12.

The adaptation is set in 1890s Martha's Vineyard, known for having a large deaf population and prominent deaf culture. Three deaf actors star in the play, which has sign language and spoken lines, along with captions on a video board.

The Lakeview play opened amid major buzz for a Broadway revival of "Spring Awakening" featuring deaf actors. Deaf West Theatre's production was well received, although some deaf reviewers said that captions would help in situations when the choreographed sign language was difficult to read.

"R+J: The Vineyard" will play at Public Access Theatre, 3809 North Broadway, through Dec. 12. The 90-minute play, a collaboration with Red Theater Chicago, is free, but tickets should be reserved in advance.
