BRIDGEPORT — The girls looked shocked when they turned to see the hairstylists holding up a handfuls of hair freshly chopped from their heads.

No, this was not a nightmare visit to the salon.

It was a Locks of Love charity event at De La Salle’s Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women, where 13 girls donated locks of their hair Thursday to financially disadvantaged children suffering from illness-induced hair loss.

At the 9 a.m. ceremony in the school’s gymnasium, the girls sat in chairs on stage in front of the entire student body as local hairstylists chopped off a generous portion of hair.

When the hairstylist raised the locks, the students cheered.

“It was not an easy decision for them,” said Diane Brown, the school’s principal. “These girls had to sacrifice a part of themselves."

That’s one of the things De La Salle is all about, she said.
