HYDE PARK — Arguably the greatest living chess player will visit the University of Chicago on Thursday ... to talk about how to put Russia’s Vladimir Putin in check.

Chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov will visit the International House, 1414 E. 59th St., at noon Thursday to talk about his new book, “Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped.”

Kasparov was the No. 1 ranked chess player in the world for 20 years until his retirement in 2005. He now leads pro-democracy opposition groups in Russia.

In his new book, Kasaparov argues that Putin does not play by the rules in his leadership of Russia and democratic countries must use diplomatic and economic measures to stop a Russian leadership he sees as increasingly threatening global security.

The free event sponsored by the Institute of Politics is open to the public, but space is limited and a seat must be reserved by visiting the event website.
