ENGLEWOOD — A Bogan High School student died after playing in a football game at Stagg Stadium in Englewood, according to Cook County officials and media reports.

Witnesses said 17-year-old Andre Smith, of Country Club Hills, walked off the field at Stagg Stadium complaining of a headache, according to the Sun-Times. He later collapsed and was brought to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he died at 6:10 a.m. Friday, according to officials.

Smith was a senior at Bogan High School, 3939 W. 79th St., in Ashburn, reports said.

"For all of us at Chicago Public Schools, our hearts are heavy and saddened this morning to learn that one of our student athletes at Bogan High School has passed away," read a Chicago Public Schools statement released Friday. "CPS grief counselors are on-site at Bogan to provide counseling for our students. We ask that you respect the privacy of the student's family and keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

An autopsy to determine the cause of Smith's death has not yet been completed.

An average of 3.4 American high school students have died every year since 1990 as a result of on-field injuries, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research. At least five high school football players have died from the sport so far this year.
