ROGERS PARK — A 25-year-old man went berserk, attacking a man in a wheelchair before tackling a police officer, after two men declined his offer to find weed for them to buy, police said.

Officers arrested Joshua Savado, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, on Sept. 22, according to a Chicago Police report of the incident.

Savado approached a 66-year-old man in a wheelchair and his 46-year-old caretaker around 11:50 a.m. on Howard Street and offered to find marijuana for them to buy, police said. They refused his offer, but Savado followed them along the 1500 block of West Howard Street, pestering them to buy weed as they continued telling him they were not interested, police said.

As the trio approached a thrift store on Howard, Savado slapped the man in the wheelchair across the face, ducked into the shop to grab a ceramic vase and stepped back out, throwing it at the pair but missing, with the vase shattering in the middle of the street, according to police.

Police out on "gang suppression" patrol were waved over by the caretaker and went to arrest Savado, who began fighting on the way to the wagon, according to officers.

Savado first threw himself down on the street, shouting that he wouldn’t go, before rolling over and wrapping around an officer’s leg in a desperate single-leg takedown attempt, police said. The first officer buckled to the ground with his leg wrapped up at the knee as other officers rushed in.

Savado rolled away and began kicking officers’ legs from the ground, causing minor injuries before he was pinned, put in leg shackles and lifted into the wagon, police said.

The original victim declined to pursue charges, according to police, but Savado was still charged with aggravated battery of a senior citizen, aggravated battery of a police officer and resisting arrest.
