Mama Sarah Obama Cancels Visit to Chicago, Morgan Park High School

MORGAN PARK — Mama Sarah Obama, the only surviving grandparent of President Barack Obama, has canceled her visit to Chicago.

The 94-year-old woman who Obama refers to as "granny" in his book "Dreams from My Father" was scheduled to speak on Friday to students at Morgan Park High School.

Morgan Mudron, a teacher at the school, said she received word late Wednesday that the trip had been canceled. No further details were given.

Mama Sarah was also planning to be on hand for the 2015 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, said Carolyn Epps, principal of the school at 1744 W. Pryor Ave. in Morgan Park.

The founder of the Nairobi, Kenya-based Mama Sarah Obama Foundation has devoted herself to helping orphans and poverty-stricken families feed and educate their children. She received an award from the United Nations for her efforts last year.

Mama Sarah is was the second wife of Obama’s late grandfather and helped raise the president's father, Barack Obama Sr. They belong to the Luo tribe and she speaks Luo.
